Yes there is a secret to recording drums that shouldn't be a secret. Once your drums are tuned properly, you must get the most out of them during the actual performance. This lies squarely on the drummer's shoulders but requires only three elements: The condition of your sticks, timing, and playing with 90 to 100% of maximum volume (even during quiet passages). Let me explain.
While brand names and types of sticks are most definately a matter of personal preference, the condition of those sticks is not. Once again, I strongly recommend new sticks for every session. In fact I recommend a new pair of sticks for every song and here's why:
When you play, you've probably noticed all the pieces of wood that end up on the floor and just about everywhere else. This wearing away of your sticks compromises the rigidness of the stick which in turn reduces the force with which you hit the drum.
As an experiment, try playing with an old pair of sticks, then play at the same volume with a new pair. Notice how much more power you feel through the sticks. Also notice how much more control you have over your timing. Being able to transfer maximum force to the drum will also make the drums sound their fullest. Drums sound best at high volume. This leads to the other two elements of the big secret. Timing and attack.
